The Best Dog Walks in and Around Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire is one of the easier counties in England to keep a dog properly exercised — flat riverside meadows, woodland, and a reservoir loop all within a short drive of the city. A few of our favourites:

Port Meadow, Oxford — a huge, flat common right on the edge of the city, with the Thames Path running along one side. Cattle and horses graze here year-round, so it's lead-on when they're about, but there's plenty of space for a proper off-lead run the rest of the time.

Shotover Country Park, Oxford — woodland, heathland, and enough varied terrain that a walk here feels like more of an adventure than a stroll around the block. Free to enter, council-run, and popular with local dog walkers for good reason.

Blenheim Palace Park, Woodstock — 2,000 acres of parkland are dog-friendly on the lead (the Formal and Walled Gardens are the exception). The lake loop is a gentle 35-minute circuit; the full park perimeter is closer to two hours if your dog has the stamina for it.

Farmoor Reservoir — a flat circular walk around the water, a few miles west of Oxford. Good for dogs that love being near water, though it's worth keeping an eye out for nesting birds and other wildlife along the banks.

Oxford Canal towpath — flat, shaded in parts, and easy to extend or shorten depending on how far you fancy going, from central Oxford out towards Kidlington and Thrupp.

Wherever you go, a quick check of on-site signage for seasonal lead rules (lambing, ground-nesting birds, livestock) is always worth it — Oxfordshire's countryside is shared with a lot of other users.
